Arthrex will build a new state-of-the-art surgical device and implant manufacturing facility in Anderson County, S.C.
Surgical solutions firm Arthrex will build a new state-of-the-art surgical device and implant manufacturing facility in Anderson County, S.C. The $30 million construction project will allow the company to create approximately 1,000 jobs, the company announced Oct. 16.
Construction on the site is expected to begin in 2018 and be completed by early 2019. The facility will include 200,000 square feet of space on a 55-acre campus. The site will be the company’s fourth U.S.-based manufacturing facility. Other Arthrex facilities are located in Ave Maria, Fla., Santa Barbara, Calif. and City of Industry, Calif.
“This investment is part of Arthrex’s global expansion plan to support the growth and development of new and innovative products that help surgeons treat their patients better,” Andy Owen, Arthrex Vice President of Manufacturing, said in a statement. “It also represents our continued commitment to manufacturing quality products in the United States.”
The 1,000 jobs are expected to be filled by 2025, according to Upstate Business Journal. Once the construction is complete, the Florida-based Arthrex, which specializes in the development of orthopedic devices, will invest an additional $35 million on equipment at the site, according to reports.
Owen said the company is looking forward to putting roots in South Carolina and “leveraging the outstanding work” in the area to provide high-level manufacturing jobs.
The new development will be located in the Anderson County Technology and Manufacturing Center, which is near Clemson University. The company said it will work with Clemson as well as Tri-County Technical College in Anderson to “develop a strong pipeline of qualified manufacturing personnel” who will be trained to work at the facility.
The construction of the Anderson facility will not affect operations or employees in Southwest Florida or California, and Owen reiterated that Arthrex is committed to its future growth, job creation and investment in Southwest Florida. This includes a significant expansion project at its corporate headquarters in North Naples scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2018, as well as partnering with community leaders to develop advanced manufacturing training programs in Collier County, the company said. The Naples expansion includes a 122-foot office tower and an expanded corporate campus, according to the company.
South Carolina is home to a number of biotech companies. Earlier this year, North Carolina-based Patheon N.V. struck a deal with Roche Holdings to take over a manufacturing facility near Columbia owned by the Swiss pharma giant.
