Dominion Diagnostics to Host a Free Continuing Education Symposium for Addiction Treatment Professionals on June 13, 2012 in San Francisco, California

SAN FRANCISCO, May 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- A free, one-day continuing education symposium for addiction treatment professionals, "Treatment, Intervention & Innovation: Challenges and Solutions in the Addiction Field Today", will be held at the Mission Bay Conference Center at the University of California San Francisco at 1675 Owens Street in San Francisco on Wednesday, June 13, 2012. The program is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (PDT) and is fully supported by Dominion Diagnostics, a national company specializing in clinical drug testing and medication monitoring services, education and support for the addiction treatment field and other medical communities.

The program will be hosted by David E. Smith, MD, FASAM, FAACT, Founder of the Haight Ashbury Free Clinics in San Francisco, California, Diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM), and Past President of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). Faculty includes Vitka Eisen, MSW, EdD of Haight Ashbury Free ClinicsWalden House (San Francisco, CA), Darryl Inaba, PharmD, CADC III of Addictions Recovery Center (Medford, OR), Thomas A. Simpatico, MD of the University of Vermont Institute for Integrative Behavioral Healthcare (Burlington, VT), Kenneth Blum, PhD of LifeGen, Inc. (San Diego, CA), Lisa Marzilli, PharmD of Dominion Diagnostics (North Kingstown, RI), and Mary P. Hauser, MA of Dominion Diagnostics (North Kingstown, RI).

The timing, host and faculty of this continuing education program are particularly fitting, as Dr. David Smith, Dr. Vitka Eisen, Dr. Darryl Inaba, and many, many others will be celebrating Haight Ashbury Free Clinics' 45th year of service at this Friday's inaugural "Black Tie and Tie Dye" gala with Walden House, HAFC's partner since July 2011. Through the leadership of Dr. Smith, Haight Ashbury Free Medical Clinic opened its doors in 1967 as the first free clinic in the country, addressing the thousands of adolescents and young adults that were streaming into San Francisco during the cultural revolution of the 1960s. During the first week of operation over 400 patients were seen. In 1969, Walden House was founded to address homelessness and adolescent drug abuse that was prominent during this time. The organizations merged on July 1, 2011 to better serve the most vulnerable members of the San Francisco community. The merged organization has grown to be a model for integrated healthcare, offering primary medical care, substance abuse treatment and mental health services.

The June 13th continuing education program supported by Dominion Diagnostics will offer addiction treatment professionals the following learning objectives: addiction as a brain disease and ties to ASAM's new definition of addiction; today's medicalization of the addiction field and partnership needs for optimal treatment outcomes; strategies to support staying involved with healthcare reform and screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT); innovative case management solutions for cost savings in the field; and improving clinical outcomes with new information and new objective tools in treatment.

Continuing education (CE) credits will be available for California psychologists, social workers, professional counselors, alcohol/drug counselors, and marriage/family counselors. Additional information and free registration is available online at http://conta.cc/June13Symposium for both CE and non-CE participants.
