AbbVie today announced the 2023-2024 class of AbbVie Immunology Scholarship recipients.
- AbbVie grants $15,000 scholarships to support the academic journeys of dozens of students and future leaders with immune-mediated diseases
- In its eighth year, the AbbVie Immunology Scholarship program has helped more than 350 students across dermatology, gastroenterology and rheumatology in their pursuit of higher education
NORTH CHICAGO, Ill., August 30, 2023 – AbbVie today announced the 2023-2024 class of AbbVie Immunology Scholarship recipients. This group includes 45 students living with chronic, immune-mediated diseases who are pursuing higher education in the United States. The scholarship seeks to empower students to grow as leaders who make a remarkable impact in the local communities where they live and work.
“AbbVie Immunology Scholarship recipients demonstrate a commitment to hard work and a life not defined by their disease,” said Patrick Horber, M.D., senior vice president, AbbVie, and president, Immunology. “AbbVie applauds the outstanding achievements of this year’s scholarship recipients as they work to achieve their educational and career goals.”
The students represent a variety of academic backgrounds, including health and medicine, and public and social services. More than 60 percent are pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) degrees.
“As a biracial woman studying science and engineering while living with Crohn’s disease, the AbbVie Immunology Scholarship will help me secure a place among the next generation of researchers,” said Corinne Martin, undergraduate bioengineering student at the University of Maryland, College Park. “I’m honored to have the support of AbbVie as I pursue my degree to help others with similar medical conditions.”
AbbVie selected this year’s class from more than 1,100 applications. Scholarships were awarded based on applicants’ academic performance, essay submissions, letters of recommendation and evidence of serving as a community role model. Some of the recipients’ accomplishments include tutoring, co-founding organizations focused on creating equity in youth sports, and chairing positions in local professional association chapters.
