Amy Baker Mandragouras has joined Foley Hoag LLP as a partner in Boston, bringing to the firm more than three decades of experience in developing and implementing intellectual property strategies, particularly in the biologics field. Mandragouras arrives with a team of colleagues, which furthers Foley Hoag’s ability to provide strategic counseling to life sciences companies and strengthens the firm’s global patent networks.
As a life sciences patent lawyer, Mandragouras works closely with a diverse range of clients, from entrepreneurs and startups to leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. She is widely recognized for her ability to assess the strengths and weaknesses of patent portfolios and craft effective patent strategies, both offensive and defensive, to protect new products and facilitate the commercialization of her clients’ innovations.
“Amy’s addition to our team further solidifies Foley Hoag’s leadership in life sciences intellectual property law,” said Jeffrey Quillen, partner and Chair of the Life Sciences Industry Group at Foley Hoag. “Her experience and track record in obtaining patent protection for cutting-edge biopharmaceuticals will greatly benefit our clients and strengthen our capabilities in this dynamic field.”
“My team and I are excited to join Foley Hoag’s patent group,” said Mandragouras. “Foley Hoag’s depth in the life sciences sector and its dedication to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment were key factors in our decision to be part of this exceptional firm.”
Mandragouras is a strong advocate for gender diversity within the legal industry and in patent law. Throughout her career, she has actively promoted the hiring, training, and mentoring of women in the field. She served on the Women’s Bar Association’s inaugural Women’s Leadership Initiative Task Force and remains dedicated to advancing opportunities for women in the legal profession. She has been named among the “Top 250 Women in IP” by Managing Intellectual Property.
Prior to joining Foley Hoag, Mandragouras was a partner at Cooley. She also spent nearly 20 years at the IP boutique Lahive & Cockfield, where she was the first woman chair of their Executive Committee and later led the firm’s combination with Nelson Mullins. Mandragouras earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Bates College and a Juris Doctorate from Northeastern University School of Law.
Mandragouras’ team includes associate Ariana Harris, who focuses her practice on advising life sciences companies in the strategic development, protection, and management of patent portfolios. Joining Mandragouras and Harris is a group of patent agents, a technology specialist, and several patent administrative professionals.
"[PTAB Proceedings practice Co-Chair] DeAnn Smith and I previously worked with Amy, and we know first-hand what an exceptional patent attorney and partner she will be at Foley Hoag,” said intellectual property partner Hathaway Russell. “Amy and her team bring a wealth of patent experience to an already deep bench and we are excited to work with her again.”
Foley Hoag’s nationally recognized life sciences industry group represents more than 2,000 public and private clients across the industry, from biotechnology and pharmaceuticals to medical device and healthcare services. It draws on the talents of a wide variety of professionals, including former scientists, MDs and high-ranking government officials, whose collective insights and experience enable clients to navigate the issues associated with the development, approval, commercialization, reimbursement and coverage of innovative medical products and services.
