PORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Acutrak® screws from Acumed LLC revolutionized headless compression of bone fractures when they were released in 1993. With the addition of Acutrak 2®, more than 1.5 million screws have been implanted to date (Acumed sales reports).
The Acutrak screw features a uniquely patented thread pitch that varies continuously from tip to tail. Each thread engages bone faster than its trailing thread, generating gradual compression along the entire length of the screw. In this way, Acutrak technology overcame the limitations of conventional bone screws that could not pass threads across a fracture site to create compression (Acumed data on file). The patented Acutrak technology has not been replicated by competitors.
Backed by more than 25 years of clinical and referenced in more than 100 studies in peer-reviewed journals, the Acutrak family of screws has demonstrated efficacy in hand, wrist, foot, and ankle applications. A bibliography of published journal articles just released by Acumed details the clinical data and biomechanics discussed regarding Acutrak headless compression screw technology.
The headless screw is designed to minimize hardware protuberance and soft tissue irritation. The Acutrak 2 family is comprised of 68 unique screw size options to fit a wide variety of applications throughout the body, with sizes ranging from 2.5 mm (diameter) by 8 mm (length) up to 7.5 mm by 120 mm.
The Acutrak screw provides the greatest push-out force, highest amount of retained compression after cyclic loading, and highest resistance to torsional loading compared to AO and Herbert screws in cadaveric and synthetic bone material (Clin Orthop Relat Res.1998;350:237245).
Acumed also recently produced a Bunions and Forefoot Reconstruction Supplemental Use Guide. Hallux valgus is the most common forefoot deformity, with an estimated prevalence of 23% in adults and 35% in those over age 65. It is estimated that approximately 350,000 bunion surgeries are performed in the United States each year (iData Research 2014). This guide includes information on the use of the Acutrak 2 screw in 8 of the most common forefoot reconstruction procedures, including Akin, MTP fusion, Lapidus, Chevron bunionectomy, SCARF bunionectomy, Weil osteotomy, Mau osteotomy, and Ludloff osteotomy.
More information about Acutrak screw technology, including a screw/pin reference chart with all of the Acutrak and Acutrak 2 screw sizes and the indications they treat, can be found on the Acutrak 2 product page.
