The DEAC Outstanding Graduate Program recognizes the significant accomplishments of graduates who receive their degrees through distance education. This year marks the 33rd consecutive year the DEAC has offered this award.

Smith, winner of the 2106 Outstanding Graduate Award, earned his Doctor of Nursing Practice, Education Leadership specialization degree in 2015 from American Sentinel. He received the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence at commencement, an honor presented to one graduate in each academic program.

Smith is from Mechanicsville, Va., and in his role as a regional director at Community Healthy Systems he assists hospitals with care management and overall compliance, fiscal integrity, and quality care. More importantly, Smith says this new role allows him time to teach.

“I work with the hospital’s administrative team, care coordination, and management, and transition teams to assist their employees in becoming the future leaders of their organizations and my DNP has already has helped me tremendously in this new role,” says Thomas M. Smith.

He chose American Sentinel’s DNP, Educational Leadership specialization program because his friend and mentor graduated from the university’s DNP, Executive Leadership specialization program and encouraged him to take a look. Smith enrolled in the program because he knew the classwork would benefit both his leadership and educational endeavors.

“Thomas embodies the best qualities you hope to find in a nurse and an educator. He’s compassionate and eager to learn. These two aspects led him to earn his Doctor of Nursing Practice, Educational Leadership specialization and receive the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence. We are proud that the DEAC named Thomas a 2016 Outstanding Graduate,” says Judy Burckhardt, Ph.D., MAEd, MSN, RN, Dean, and Professor, Nursing and Healthcare Programs at American Sentinel University.

Selection criteria for the award includes a GPA of 3.5 or higher, evidence that the graduate has made significant contributions to society in his/her chosen profession, as well as an essay submission demonstrating the graduate’s application of knowledge and skills acquired in the online classroom to his/her career and community.
