National Anemia Action Council Enhanced Web Site Serves Multiple Needs

MILWAUKEE, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Anemia Action Council Inc. (NAAC) has launched an enhanced Web site dedicated to raising public awareness to the prevalence and implications of anemia. The Web site ( http://www.anemia.org/ ) now provides critical information resources for medical professionals, patients, and the media about the growing dangers of anemia, a hidden epidemic.

“There is a critical need for healthcare providers to recognize the importance of identifying and treating anemia,” said Allen R. Nissenson, MD, president of NAAC and professor of medicine at the University of California- Los Angeles School of Medicine. “NAAC is committed to increasing awareness of anemia and encouraging new research in this important area.”

The Web site offers separate resource sections for medical professionals, patients and the media addressing the diagnosis and treatment of anemia. Specific features are tailored to each individual audience.

 -- Physicians and allied health professionals have access to monographs, newsletters and lists of peer-reviewed articles involving diagnosis and treatment of anemia. Medical educators also can access slide libraries detailing anemia’s effects on various patient groups. -- Patients suspecting they suffer from anemia will find descriptions of the condition and its symptoms, a quiz to help measure their own symptoms and a list of frequently asked questions discussing anemia and its effects. -- Media members can access fast facts about anemia, as well as finding NAAC staff contacts and links to national experts who can address key aspects of this public health problem. The media section also includes information on recently published articles on anemia. 

The Web site provides access to Anemia Watch, a quarterly review of articles pertaining to anemia and AnemiaAlert, a monthly update of articles and issues relating to the condition. All Web site content is reviewed by members of NAAC, a multi-disciplinary group of 25 physicians and allied health professional dedicated to the treatment of anemia.

“By better understanding, the causes, consequences and effectiveness of various treatments for anemia, we hope to have a significant impact on patient survival rates, their quality of life and their general well-being,” Nissenson said.
