TEL-AVIV, Israel & PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Results from the first pilot study of Cheetah Medical’s early differential diagnostic protocol for acute heart failure were presented Thursday, May 14th, at the 2009 Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Annual Meeting in New Orleans. Heart failure exacerbations frequently manifest as shortness of breath, or “dyspnea.” Of over 119 million U.S. hospital emergency department visits in 2006, over 3 million were for the chief complaint of shortness of breath. In addition to heart failure, shortness of breath is associated with a variety of other diagnoses involving the lungs, heart and other organs, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, metabolic and psychiatric conditions. Early, correct diagnosis and management is key to improve outcomes while relieving heavy patient burdens in hospital emergency departments.
