Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley has reappointed Dr. Hercules Pinkney, interim president of Montgomery College, to a second two-year term on the Maryland Life Sciences Advisory Board.
The Life Sciences Advisory Board promotes Maryland’s life sciences industry. The 15-member board includes representatives from federal agencies, businesses, and higher education. Along with promoting life science opportunities in the state, the board works to increase collaboration and coordination among life science organizations, develop strategies to coordinate state and federal resources, and make recommendations to address critical needs in the life sciences.

Thomas Watkins, president and CEO of Human Genome Sciences and chairman of the Life Sciences Advisory Board, said, “Dr. Pinkney plays a key role on the Life Sciences Advisory Board, particularly in championing talent generation and workforce development. He is a terrific advocate for the important role of Maryland community colleges in educating and preparing the future employees and leaders of the bioscience community. I am delighted that Governor O’Malley has reappointed one of our finest educators to the Life Sciences Advisory Board and that we will continue to benefit from Dr. Pinkney’s insights and experience.”
Dr. Pinkney began serving as interim president of Montgomery College in September 2009. Previously, he was the vice president and provost of the College’s Germantown Campus. In that role, he helped lead the College’s Germantown Development Project, which consists of a Bioscience Education Center, a Montgomery County-operated business incubator, and the Life Science and Technology Park. The College plans to start site work on the Bioscience Education Center later this year. The Germantown Innovation Center opened successfully in the fall of 2008 with businesses located on the second floor and College classrooms and offices on the first floor. The park, which would support and complement the education of Montgomery College science students, is still in its planning stage.
