Texas Trusts DISCO for Ediscovery in Opioid Multi-District Legislation

Texans are seeking justice for harm caused by prescription opioid drugs and turned to Austin-based legal software-as-a-service leader DISCO as its ediscovery partner.

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Texans are seeking justice for harm caused by prescription opioid drugs and turned to Austin-based legal software-as-a-service leader DISCO as its ediscovery partner.

Given the public health crisis resulting from the over-prescription and overuse of opioids, more than 40 counties in Texas came together in a multidistrict litigation (MDL) court. The counties are seeking damages for communities affected by the actions of the manufacturers, distributors, and retailers of opioids and synthetic opioids.

DISCO Selected for Speed, Ease-of-Use, and AI Capabilities for Document Review

Critical to the fight for justice is the selection of a discovery solution that is fast, easy-to-use, and able to be shared across multiple law firms and users involved in the litigation. The platform would need to manage extremely high volumes of data, with an estimated 20 TB produced from multiple defendants. After a lengthy evaluation process where multiple ediscovery solutions were considered, the Plaintiff Steering Committee ultimately chose DISCO.

Several features of DISCO differentiated it from the competition. The artificial intelligence capabilities (DISCO AI) enables users to quickly and accurately review the most salient documents first. Features like visual analytics and search builder make finding critical documents easy and intuitive. The platform can easily and effectively manage a high volume of documents, as well as multiple users across multiple organizations.

“To ensure we’re working as expeditiously as we can for our clients, we needed more than a cutting-edge discovery platform — we needed a partner that would be an extension of our team as we fight for justice in Texas,” said Jeffrey B. Simon, founding partner, Simon Greenstone Panatier, PC. “DISCO goes beyond exceptional legal technology. It is a complete package of people, processes, and technologies that understand plaintiff challenges and how we need to collaborate on discovery and beyond.”

The MDL team immediately realized the impact of DISCO. Upon its selection, the DISCO professional services team trained the team of more than 40 talented attorneys who will be utilizing DISCO to build the case for Texas plaintiffs. Even lawyers who never used DISCO before were able to quickly get up to speed on the product and understand how to work with the large volume of information that will be required for this litigation. Users have the tools to immediately dive in, create searches, and analyze critical documents to uncover the facts.

“Thanks to DISCO, our team has been able to get to work to try to get justice for the cities and counties of Texas that are dealing with the impacts of this opioid epidemic,” said Mikal C. Watts, founding partner of Watts Guerra LLP. “DISCO’s platform helps us work smarter for the clients.”

“When pursuing massive cases like the opioid MDL in Texas, technology can be a game-changer. Plaintiffs need to quickly, easily and efficiently find the evidence needed to support their theories and their clients,” said Andrew Shimek, DISCO’s chief revenue officer. “DISCO is proud to be a part of the efforts of our home state to help counter the effects of the opioid epidemic.”
