TAMPA, Fla., April 3, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Principal and CEO of The Surgicalist Group (TSG) Mit Desai, MD FACS announced today Dr. Casey J. Thomas, DO, FACS, FACOS, will serve as the new Chief Medical Officer for TSG.

Dr. Casey J. Thomas, DO, FACS, FACOS, will serve as the new Chief Medical Officer for The Surgicalist Group.

“Dr. Thomas is an invaluable new asset to The Surgicalist Group’s team. His knowledge and leadership made him a natural choice to lead the National TSG medical team. He will be instrumental in enabling TSG to expand rapidly and become more efficient in our practices and to sustain more strategic partnerships with an emphasis on quality assurance and the highest level of patient care,” said Desai.

Dr. Thomas serves as a Senior Surgical Partner at Salt Lake Surgical Services. He graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in 1993. In 2000, he received his medical degree from the Michigan State College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Thomas spent five years studying General Surgery at the Mount Clemens General Hospital, followed by a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care and Trauma from the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Thomas is a board certified Surgical Critical Care and General Surgeon and has an extensive background as an Instructor and published researcher.

Dr. Thomas commented saying, “The Surgicalist Model represents the future of emergent surgical care. Our team evaluated the effect of a Surgicalist staffing model at a local community hospital and an astounding $2.4 million of additional hospital income was captured off cholecystectomies alone because of the efficiencies of The Surgicalist Model.”

The benefits of The Surgicalist Model extend beyond fewer complications on emergent care surgical procedures, shorter wait time and reduced length of stay statistics; a five year study of acute care patients at a community hospital published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons highlighted improved cost outcomes as an additional advantage. For the surgical cases studied, hospital costs decreased by 31% under the model, with the most notable reduction for appendectomies (37% cost reduction).

As the newly appointed CMO of TSG, Dr. Thomas will oversee clinical operations in addition to overseeing the effective management of all TSG medical centers. Furthermore, he will be the liaison between administration and medical staff, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of medical care.
