ASHP Foundation Announces the 2018 Literature Awards

The ASHP Research and Education Foundation has selected the recipients of the 2018 Literature Awards.

Awardees will be recognized at ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in Anaheim, Calif.

BETHESDA, MD (November 16, 2018) — The ASHP Research and Education Foundation has selected the recipients of the 2018 Literature Awards. The Literature Awards honors pharmacists who have made significant contributions to biomedical literature and have published high-impact articles in primary peer-reviewed journals.

“One of the key pillars of the healthcare profession is scholarly research,” said review panelist William (Doug) Figg, Pharm.D., M.B.A. “This award recognizes those within our profession of pharmacy who have devoted their lives to making an impact in the understanding of diseases and the care of patients by sharing their research in scientific literature.”

The recipient of the 2018 Literature Award for Sustained Contributions is Rhonda M. Cooper-DeHoff, Pharm.D., M.S., FACC, FAHA, FCCP. Dr. Cooper-DeHoff is a tenured associate professor at the Department of Pharmacotherapy and Translational Research and associate director at the Center for Pharmacogenomics at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. She also serves as director of the Personalized Medicine Program for the UF Gainesville campus, as well as director of Graduate Program in Precision Medicine.

Dr. Cooper-DeHoff’s research has centered on hypertension, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, coronary artery disease, and the pharmacogenomics associated with response and adverse effects of medication. Her more than 170 articles have helped define demographic, clinical, metabolic, metabolomics, genetic and pharmacogenetic factors associated with responses to antihypertensive drugs and cardiovascular outcomes with antihypertensive therapy.

Dr. Cooper-DeHoff has been a professor for almost 20 years and in 2015 became a faculty member for the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Research Institute’s Mentored Research Investigator Training Program in Washington, D.C. She has received multiple awards, including the Distinguished Investigator Award from the American College of Clinical Pharmacy in 2015 and the Top Population Science Paper Award from the American Heart Association Journal in 2011. Dr. Cooper-DeHoff was recognized as a Fellow by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology in 2010, making her one of the first pharmacists to earn this distinction.

Dr. Cooper-DeHoff also served as the director of the International Pharmacy Coordinating Center for the INternational VErapamil Trandolapril STudy (INVEST), a network of over 800 research sites in 14 countries that enrolled over 22,000 patients. More recently she has been leading the PCORI-based Cardiovascular Health Collaborative Research Group Data Core, whose work includes the development of distinct computable phenotypes for hypertension, adult congenital heart disease, and heart failure.

“I am so honored to be selected for this prestigious ASHP Foundation award,” said Dr. Cooper-DeHoff. “It is especially exciting that I am able to receive this award in Anaheim, where I was born and raised. Being honored by the premier society within the profession of pharmacy, based on the totality of my research program and publications over the last several decades, is extremely rewarding.”
