Supporting young scientists at the seed stage of their research, ARCS fulfills an essential funding need during early career phases that are seldom served by traditional funding sources. As stated in The Wall Street Journal, the number of science and engineering grant recipients younger than 36 fell to 3% in 2010, from 18% in 1983.
Recipients of ARCS awards represent six Northern California universities: Stanford University, San Francisco State University, and the University of California at Berkeley, Davis, Santa Cruz and San Francisco (UCSF.)
“Besides addressing a funding need at this critical research stage, ARCS invites promising young scientists to forge interdisciplinary connections across a number of scientific fields,” notes Susan Mooradian, President of ARCS Foundation Northern California Chapter. “The Symposium event also extends ARCS Foundation’s investment in each student’s work by facilitating conversation with those attending the event, many of whom represent Silicon Valley’s most notable enterprises.”
Following upon the inaugural ARCS Symposium held at The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, California in May 2015, the 2016 Symposium will highlight the work of the 20152016 academic year recipients of ARCS awards. Six onstage presentations and 59 student poster presentations will be organized into four categories: Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Engineering and Environmental Sciences. The program has been assembled by ARCS Symposium Scientific Advisor W. James Nelson, Ph.D., Professor of Biology, Molecular and Cellular Physiology, and Rudy J. and Daphne Donohue Munzer Professor in the School of Medicine, Stanford University.
“This is a unique and amazing opportunity to meet the next generation of top scientists and inventors, before they are known outside of academia,” shared 2016 ARCS Symposium Chair Nancy Mueller, who secured Sequoia Capital Founder and Chairman Sir Michael Moritz as the event’s keynote speaker.
The 2015 inaugural ARCS Symposium featured addresses by The Tech Awards co-Founder Dick King, Silicon Valley Bank’s John China, noted author and journalist Michael S. Malone and ClearStreet Chairman Kim Polese, herself an ARCS Scholar Award recipient while pursuing an advanced degree at UC Berkeley in the 1980’s. All recognized the vital role young scientists play in enabling a dynamic Silicon Valley and U.S. economy.
At a recent private gathering of ARCS supporters, Andrew Norman, an ARCS Scholar pursuing a Ph.D. in Developmental Stem Cell Biology at UCSF shared,
“I participate in many Symposia, and the ARCS Symposium is one of my favorites. It’s not just about the recognition and support I receive as a scientist. It’s also about the great ideas that come from all the conversations I have with fellow scientists, inventors, entrepreneurs - people who are making great things happen.”
