Unfortunately, dogs can suffer the pain of a toothache just like people but are unable to communicate this pain. If a dog is unusually unresponsive, whines or whimpers for no apparent reason, licks a particular part of its body, or bites or snaps, it may be a toothache. A common tip off that it is a mouth issue, is when an animal rubs the side of its face on a carpet etc. Assisi Animal Health shares four ways to reduce tooth pain in dogs.
See the vet. First and foremost, take your dog to the vet immediately for an exam. The vet may recommend drug treatment, surgery, or a combination approach. If the vet recommends pain medication, ask how the Assisi Loop can help. It has been proven to alleviate both chronic and acute pain. After your dog's evaluation, the following can also be done at home to keep your dog comfortable.
Offer a massage. Give your dog a head-to-toe massage to soothe and relax it. Focusing on your dog in this manner will also strengthen your bond and allow you to gently check for any bumps or scrapes on its body.
Watch it's diet. Any sudden decrease or increase in appetite may be a sign of the pain or discomfort of a toothache. Cold or ice water may soothe the pain. Your vet can help determine if you need to make any changes to your dog's diet and it may be suggested that for a short period of time you soak your animal's food to make chewing easier.
Monitor exercise response. Pay close attention to how your dog responds after walking or playing. If they act sluggish during normal exercise, you may need to reduce activity for a few days while they are under initial treatment.
