Dr. Sultan ‘Sully’ Ahamed Tapped to Lead PIAA

ROCKVILLE, Md., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Physician Insurers Association of America (PIAA) Board of Directors has chosen Sultan “Sully” Ahamed, M.D., to serve as its chairman.

Dr. Ahamed is a Senior Attending Surgeon and a Vascular Associate at Backus Hospital in Norwich, Conn. He is the President and Chairman of the Connecticut Medical Insurance Company -- a doctor-owned medical liability insurer that covers almost 2,000 physicians and dentists in Connecticut.

In his acceptance speech at the PIAA Annual Meeting in San Diego, Dr. Ahamed stressed the importance of PIAA members reporting to the PIAA Data Sharing Project -- a database of over 200,000 medical malpractice claims. The Data Sharing Project is used by the PIAA, its member companies, and outside agencies and organizations to better understand malpractice trends and increase patient safety efforts.

Dr. Ahamed, who has served on the PIAA Board of Directors for 8 years, was an alternate delegate to the American Medical Association and Chair of the New England Delegation.
