PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Varian, Inc. (NasdaqGS: VARI) today reported that its Board of Directors has elected Garry W. Rogerson, the company’s President and Chief Executive Officer, as Chairman of the Board. He replaces Allen J. Lauer, who retired from the Board upon expiration of his director term at the annual meeting of stockholders held on February 5, 2009. Rogerson will continue as the company’s Chief Executive Officer.
“We were very fortunate to have had Al as our chairman following his retirement as chief executive officer in 2003,” said Rogerson. “With his more than forty years of service with Varian, he provided wise counsel and guidance to the Board as well as the management team.”
Rogerson joined Varian Associates, Inc. (Varian, Inc.'s predecessor company) in 1979, and held numerous management positions before being appointed chief executive officer in 2004. He has served as the company’s president since 2002, and served as chief operating officer from 2002 to 2004, as senior vice president of its scientific instruments business from 2001 to 2002, and as vice president of its analytical instruments business from 1999 to 2001. Rogerson has been a director of the Company since 2003. He is also the non-executive Chairman of the Board of Coherent, Inc. Rogerson earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Kent at Canterbury, England.
