September 03, 2013 -- GEA Process Engineering will be exhibiting at ICSE/P-MEC, October 22-24, in Frankfurt to promote its GEA Niro Pharmaceutical Spray Drying technology. Spray drying is rapidly becoming the technology of choice for pharmaceutical manufacturers that need fast, high volume, c-GMP drying to achieve free-flowing powders, with specific advanced properties, even for potent compounds.
By providing a high level of control over particle size and molecular characteristics, spray drying allows the commercialisation of previously unattainable delivery methods and the development of new pharmaceutical formulations that would be difficult to achieve with alternative technologies. Improved solubility, controlled release, taste masking and advanced powders with increased bioavailability are all achievable using spray drying. The technology can be applied equally to excipients, APIs or finished drug products and is an integral part of continuous processing for solid dose manufacturing.
Product development and contract manufacture
GEA Process Engineering’s Pharmaceutical Spray Drying facility in Copenhagen is one of the world’s most acknowledged GMP spray drying facilities and certified for the production of clinical trial materials. The facility is fully equipped with GEA Niro spray drying equipment for product and process evaluation and optimization, including production of clinical trial materials and available for contract manufacturing. It is staffed by specialists with a deep understanding of the technology, its capabilities and the processes involved. This allows customers to test the feasibility of spray drying, develop new products and bring them to market quickly and profitably without the need to invest in capital equipment.
One particle at a time
GEA Process Engineering has also pioneered single droplet drying. The GEA Niro DRYING KINETICS ANALYZER™ allows scientists to watch the changing structure of a single particle as it dries and thereby make tests using only a few droplets rather than the several kilos that are required with traditional test equipment. It also makes it possible to test a wide range of feed properties and drying parameters much faster than was possible previously.
Spray drying of highly potent compounds
The demand for high containment technology has increased significantly in the pharmaceutical industry. GEA Process Engineering has introduced a new concept for high containment spray drying that allows customers to spray dry potent compounds and work safely at containment levels below 10 µg/m3 (OEL). Along with other technological innovations, it includes high containment GEA Buck® valves to discharge the powder safely.
The new GEA Niro high containment spray dryers provide high personal protection and safe working environment during operation, discharge and cleaning, and they allow pharmaceutical companies to exploit the benefits of spray drying even highly potent products. The new concept is also available to upgrade existing installations.
GEA Niro mobile minor™ on show
GEA Process Engineering will bring a GEA Niro MOBILE MINOR™ spray dryer to P-MEC. The MOBILE MINOR™ is the leading laboratory spray dryer and used by many of the leading companies working with pharmaceuticals and pharma-grade products worldwide. It is the ideal choice for making test work and samples, and for establishing the process data required for commercial production.
Company representatives will be available on Stand 41J72, Hall 4 to provide insights into the technology and its benefits, and to discuss how working with GEA helps clients exploit the full potential of pharmaceutical spray drying.
