BLOOMINGTON, Minn., June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- William H. Frey II, PhD, Director of the Alzheimer’s Research Center at HealthPartners Research Foundation, was awarded a $200,000 grant to study the use of his Intranasal Drug Delivery system towards developing a treatment for dementia among Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) patients. The grant was awarded through the National Institute of Mental Health.
“This study will not only increase our knowledge of dementia in patients with AIDS,” said Frey. “It will also increase our understanding of the more common dementia, Alzheimer’s disease.”
With new anti-viral treatments, patients infected with HIV are living longer. As these HIV patients age, dementia is becoming an increasing problem.
The grant is for one year and will be a collaborative effort with the Northern California Institute for Research and Education and the San Francisco Veterans Administration Medical Center. Lynn Pulliam, PhD of the University of California San Francisco, a nationally known expert on AIDS dementia, is the principal collaborator on the project.
