NephCure Kidney International Release: Selfies For A Cure: The #SUBCselfie Challenge

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa., March 12, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- What do BravoTV reality stars Mercedes Javid and Golnsea “GG” Gharachedaghi, and lifestyle gurus The Moms have in common? They’ve all decided to STAND UP & BE COUNTED in the fight against kidney disease by taking the online #SUBCselfie challenge.

(clockwise from top) The Moms, Mercedes Javid and Golnsea "GG" Gharachedaghi, Owen & Parker Siegel and Sydney & Matthew Levine take the #SUBCselfie Challenge to raise awareness and money in the fight against FSGS and Nephrotic Syndrome.

The online challenge began on March 1 when Long Island, NY teenager Sydney Levine decided to give her 11-year-old brother Matthew a birthday present, and celebrate his life as he battles the potentially fatal kidney disease FSGS (Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis).

Along with her friend Parker Siegel, whose brother Owen has Nephrotic Syndrome, Sydney grabbed a cell phone and they did what many teens do they made a video. This wasn’t the usual selfie, however; their video was a challenge to take selfies for a cure: the STAND UP & BE COUNTED selfie challenge (#SUBCselfie). Here’s how it works:

  • Grab your phone
  • Take a selfie, or better yet make a video and tell your friends why you are choosing to STAND UP & BE COUNTED to fight kidney disease
  • Post your #SUBCselfie with the hashtag to your favorite networking sites
  • Challenge 5 friends to do the same and keep the party going through March, which is Kidney Awareness Month, until Matthew’s birthday on March 31.
  • Join an army of activists fighting to end FSGS by donating $5 to NephCure Kidney International, (www.nephcure.org/donate) the only organization focused on funding research to end FSGS and the other diseases that cause Nephrotic Syndrome

Since March 1, the #SUBCselfie challenge has begun to spread online, with videos popping up on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Today is World Kidney Day keep the party going! Join Mercedes, GG, and many more in support of NephCure Kidney International and the fight against FSGS and Nephrotic Syndrome.
