HOUSTON, March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- SpectraCell Laboratories, Inc., announced that it has acquired the assets of Lipid Labs, Inc., in a transaction involving cash, notes, and future contingent consideration. SpectraCell, a Houston-based clinical laboratory founded in 1993 by William (Chip) Stanberry, its Chairman and CEO, is a national leader in nutritional testing. Lipid Labs, a start-up clinical laboratory in The Woodlands, specializes in advanced testing for cholesterol, or lipid particles. The company utilizes a patented ultracentrifugation technology invented at Texas A&M University and further developed by Dr. Jan Troup, the company's founder, who has joined SpectraCell's scientific staff.
In recent years, the medical and scientific community has discovered that, beyond "standard" cholesterol tests, an important independent factor for heart disease can be determined by measuring the density and number of lipoprotein particles, to which cholesterol is attached. Patients with a normal cholesterol value, but abnormal particle sizes or numbers, can be at serious risk for cardiovascular disease.
SpectraCell services physicians nationwide by providing a unique assessment of a patient's nutritional status. Unlike traditional serum tests, SpectraCell's patented FIA(TM) (Functional Intracellular Analysis) measures whether each individual's white blood cells are deficient in various vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants.
"Adding advanced cholesterol testing to our menu of specialized lab services will leverage our existing sales and marketing resources," said Chip Stanberry, SpectraCell's CEO. "While this new methodology is not directly related to our vitamin testing technology, there is commonality in that both labs assess factors related to heart disease, and offer "esoteric" state-of- the-art tests that are of interest to progressive physicians who utilize the newest laboratory procedures."
About SpectraCell Laboratories -- SpectraCell is a CLIA accredited laboratory serving physicians nationwide by providing an innovative assessment of a patient's nutritional status. Unlike traditional serum tests, SpectraCell's patented FIA(TM)(Functional Intracellular Analysis) evaluates how an individual's white cells respond to specific environments of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants. By measuring the functional availability of 28 different vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in a patient's own cells, differences in metabolism, age, genetics, prescription drug usage, absorption rate or other factors are taken into consideration, opening a true "window on intracellular function."
