Situated in the Tianjin Economic Development Area (TEDA) among 3,700 foreign venture enterprise companies including Motorola, Toyota, Yamaha and Nestle with total investment of more than $US18 billion, the TEDA International Cardiovascular Hospital is entirely dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of heart patients, says a hospital spokesman.

It has a floor space of 76,000 square metres with 600 beds, 16 operating theatres and six heart catheterization labs, 80 ICU beds and 40 CCU beds. It is designed to conduct 10,000 operations every year. Apart from treatment, the hospital also provides teaching, research and rehabilitation.

At the hospital’s opening, President and Founder, Dr. Liu Xiaocheng, a renowned cardiac surgeon, said more than $US88 million had been invested in the first phase of the medical research facility.

Heart specialists and senior management were recruited worldwide, including the United States, making the hospital an international cardiac facility.

The diagnoses, cures and scientific research equipment includes dual-gradient nuclear and magnetic sympathetic vibration; 16-row CT; the third EBT in the world (new electric bundle CT. The other two are in the US); ECT; flat-plate type digital shadow-reducing heart catheter machine; three-dimensional, the first automatic medicine-installing machine in China; and a high-power electric microscope.

The widening of the Tianjin hospital’s services for inpatients and outpatients has been made possible by the signing of a medical cooperation agreement with Mondial Assistance (Beijing) Service Co Ltd, established in 2003 as part of the French Mondial Assistance Group -- the first company accredited with qualification for travel and roadside assistance services in China.

According to the agreement, foreigners who suddenly develop cardiovascular symptoms during their travels in North China’s Tianjin and its surrounding areas will be referred by Mondial, Beijing to the Tianjin medical establishment.

Under another Agreement reached between the hospital and Rotary International, the organisation’s “Gift of Life” plan will be extended to offer every year 10 Chinese children free heart surgery.
