Transoma Medical Acquires LDS Life Sciences

SAINT PAUL, Minn., Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Transoma Medical, the leader in implantable wireless monitoring systems, announced today that it has purchased the assets of the LDS Life Sciences business (formerly Gould Instrument Systems) from LDS Test and Measurement, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of SPX Corporation. LDS Life Sciences manufactures and distributes advanced software and hardware-based systems for the acquisition and analysis of physiological signals under the Ponemah brand name. Transoma Medical plans to integrate the Ponemah product lines with wireless implanted sensor systems offered by its Data Sciences International (DSI) division. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

“This represents an ideal collaboration. Our DSI division and LDS Life Sciences both serve the life science research community and have been co- marketing partners since 2000,” said Brian Brockway, Transoma Medical president and CEO. “When fully integrated, DSI and Ponemah products will add significant value for researchers by providing tools to speed drug discovery and safety assessment studies, while reducing overall costs.” Brockway noted that the cost of developing an FDA-approved drug is increasing and approaching $1 billion.

The combined DSI and Ponemah customer list includes nearly all of the 20 largest drug development companies in the world. Many current customers pipe data derived from DSI wireless sensors into Ponemah data acquisition and analysis systems. DSI offers sensor systems that collect and transmit various physiological data, such as arterial blood pressure, electrocardiography (ECG) and body temperature. By integrating the DSI product line with Ponemah’s advanced software and hardware data analysis systems, customers will have a fully integrated system with cutting-edge analysis and reporting tools and the lowest overall study costs.

“DSI is committed to developing technologies that help drug researchers identify promising compounds as early as possible, enabling them to focus resources efficiently and accelerate safety assessment studies,” said Lance Wallin, DSI division general manager. “We know the Ponemah team and look forward to working with them. We recognize that they have built a great business with a solid reputation and the combined offering represents a strategic fit for both organizations. This is a good move for Ponemah customers and employees.”

Ponemah will continue to operate from its Cleveland area office.
