RALEIGH, N.C., July 5 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to explosive growth and demand for health care services in northern Wake County, WakeMed Health & Hospitals is opening North Carolina’s first full-service emergency department (ED) in a facility without inpatient beds. The new ED is located at WakeMed North Healthplex and will open for patients beginning Monday, July 11 at 7:00 a.m.
The full-service ED occupies 13,500 square feet on the first floor of the WakeMed North Healthplex and was designed with the patients and their families in mind. All elements were selected to offer the latest technology with a relaxed atmosphere and the maximum amount of patient privacy.
The department features seven patient care rooms, including four general treatment rooms, one psychiatric care room, one GYN room and a resuscitation room. Two of the four general treatment rooms are designed to accommodate the special care and safety needs of pediatric patients and two patient treatment areas are equipped for negative pressure.
There are also three monitored patient observation rooms, allowing for stays of up to 23 hours for patients needing monitoring, further testing or medicines, but not an inpatient stay. A full line of imaging equipment, including mammography, bone densitometry, tomography, ultrasound, general radiology and a new fixed CT scanner, as well as the existing onsite laboratory, offers comprehensive patient testing 24 hours a day.
The WakeMed North Healthplex adds a fourth full-service ED to the WakeMed system. The new ED will be staffed by the same board-certified physicians that serve ED patients at WakeMed Cary Hospital and WakeMed Raleigh Campus’ adult and freestanding Children’s Emergency Departments. A WakeMed Mobile Care Services vehicle will be permanently stationed at WakeMed North Healthplex for patient transport to area hospitals.
WakeMed Health & Hospitals, one of the first hospital systems in the country, is a private, not-for-profit health care organization based in Raleigh, N.C. The system comprises a network of health care facilities throughout Wake and Johnston Counties, including a 515-bed tertiary referral hospital, a 114-bed full-service hospital, a 68-bed rehabilitation hospital, two full-service clinics as well as two short-term, skilled-nursing and outpatient facilities.
