“A committee of our board of directors sat down with each of the three major candidates. Although all three would be competent stewards of the city, one stood out as extraordinary. Nathan set out an ambitious but realistic vision for our city. And his record in elected office has shown that he can deliver on things others have given up on as ‘too difficult’,” said Joe Panetta, President and CEO of Biocom. “It’s time for San Diego to have a Mayor with a bold plan capable of propelling San Diego to a position of prominence. That person is Nathan Fletcher.”

Prior to his first election to the State Assembly in 2008, Fletcher met with Biocom to discuss its legislative priorities. High on that list was enactment of a single sales factor corporate tax apportionment in California, a formula which rewards companies who invest in California by building facilities and employing Californians. Biocom and other California stakeholders had tried fruitlessly for many years to enact such a formula. Within three months of being sworn into office, Assemblyman Fletcher was instrumental in getting single sales factor enacted into law.

Fletcher continued to work with Biocom and the life science industry on such issues as the 2009 water bond measure passed by the Legislature and signed into law by the Governor, assuring that Biocom’s concerns regarding water allocation formulas for research and development facilities were addressed.

“In 2014, the eyes of the biotech world will be on San Diego as we host the Biotechnology Industry Organization International Convention. The following year San Diego will host the equivalent function for the medical device industry. We can think of no better ambassador to promote San Diego life sciences than Mayor Nathan Fletcher,” continued Panetta. “Biocom is proud to endorse Nathan Fletcher for Mayor, and stand with him in his campaign.”
