CLEVELAND, Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- On Sept. 20, Cleveland Clinic will host “A National Dialogue on Biomedical Conflicts of Interest and Innovation Management,” a groundbreaking summit examining the interface between health care entities and industry, and the issues created by this growing trend.
Medical schools, hospitals and biomedical research institutions are increasing their partnerships with industry to accelerate the rate of medical discovery, innovation and clinical application. As these partnerships increase, and the scope of medical research broadens, so does the need for a strong framework that protects patient interests and maintains research independence.
“Leading providers, research centers and academic institutions are working to identify, disclose and manage conflicts of interest to preserve the integrity of research and patient treatment,” said Guy M. Chisolm, Ph.D., Vice Chairman of the Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute and Chair of the Clinic’s Conflict of Interest Committee. “This summit is intended to promote a candid dialogue on these timely issues and provide an impetus for avoiding or managing potential conflicts of interest in a way that allows innovation to coexist transparently with integrity in biomedical research and patient care.”
This compelling and thought-provoking summit will take place Sept. 20 at the InterContinental Hotel and Conference Center Cleveland, located on the Cleveland Clinic campus. The summit is expected to draw decision-makers from nationally renowned research institutions, clinical centers, industry and government. Nina Totenberg, Legal Affairs Correspondent for National Public Radio, will moderate several discussions on key issues regarding innovation and its application in contemporary biomedical medicine and research.
Also scheduled to speak at the summit are Claudia Adkison, J.D., Ph.D., Executive Associate Dean for Administrative and Faculty Affairs, Emory University School of Medicine; Gail Cassell, Ph.D., Vice President, Infectious Disease, Eli Lilly; Jeffrey M. Drazen, M.D., Editor-in-Chief, New England Journal of Medicine; Jeffrey P. Kahn, Ph.D., Director, Center for Bioethics, University of Minnesota; Darrell G.
