Concerns Grow Over Getting High On Anti-Diarrheal Drug, Published In Annals Of Emergency Medicine

Self-treating opioid addicts looking for a legal replacement for harder-to-acquire prescription drugs are increasingly turning to a new source: over-the-counter, anti-diarrheal medication.

According to a recent journal article published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine, officials in the Upstate New York Poison Center became alarmed recently when they documented the deaths of two men after they overdosed on loperamide, an opioid that is the active ingredient in anti-diarrheal medicines such as Imodium A-D.
