LAKE FOREST, IL--(Marketwire - January 04, 2011) - CoreSource, a leading third-party administrator, has selected Biologics, Inc., an integrated oncology management company, to manage cancer treatment and offer support to clients’ employees. Biologics’ patient-centered approach manages the costs and delivery of care, benefiting both members and employers.
With cancer costs at an all-time high, doubling in the past 20 years, many employers are looking for ways to help control expenses. Only 1 percent of plan members typically are diagnosed with cancer, but treatment costs can reach 15 percent or more of a plan’s overall costs. Biologics uses patient management, treatment validation and clinical claim audits to manage costs and to focus on what’s most appropriate for the patient.
“Not only are medical costs, and specifically cancer costs, exploding, but the treatment maze that members diagnosed with cancer go through can be frustrating,” said Donna Heiser, Vice President, Healthcare Management, CoreSource. “This may be one of the most difficult times of a member’s life. It’s hard for a member to understand all the treatments and tests while also dealing with multiple doctors and labs.”
According to Heiser, it’s necessary for someone to oversee the care that is given to members with cancer -- to ensure the best outcomes, avoid possible duplicate tests and contain costs. Once a member is diagnosed with cancer, his or her case is reviewed by the Healthcare Management team of Registered Nurses at CoreSource.
Then, the member is assigned a dedicated Oncology Certified Nurse to assist the member through treatment and all other aspects of care. The Oncology Certified Nurse creates a personal care plan for the member, contacts the member at critical times based on the individualized treatment plan, offers guidance on treatments and tests, and helps prepare members for upcoming appointments and procedures.
“Assigning an Oncology Certified Nurse provides patients a much needed single voice to help navigate the continuum of complex care and providers,” said Shayne Malone, Vice President of Sales, Biologics. “We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with CoreSource. Their integrated approach to medical management, claims operations and data informatics is an excellent complement to our oncology payor solution.” CoreSource clients’ employees began benefiting from Biologics services on Jan. 1, 2011.
“Having the ability to enhance a member’s experience during such a challenging time is important to us,” said Heiser. “We want them to understand what’s happening, so they feel as comfortable with the process as they can be which is exactly why we decided to offer a cancer management specific program.”
