Jamieson Vitamins Urges Canadians to Donate to Canadian Cancer Society Research

Jamieson to match donations dollar-for-dollar to $100,000 at cancer.ca/discovery

TORONTO, July 25, 2018 /CNW/ - Starting today, when Canadians support cancer research through the Canadian Cancer Society, their donation will have double the impact. This summer Jamieson Vitamins will match Canadian Cancer Society Gift of Discovery gift purchases dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000. Donating to cancer research by purchasing the Gift of Discovery helps fund important cancer research led by Canada’s best and brightest researchers.

For $60, the Gift of Discovery gives hope to those affected by cancer, enabling them to live life to the fullest. “Cancer can be one of the most disheartening experiences ever,” says Alyssa Vito, triple negative breast cancer survivor and researcher. “Each cancer is different, its own disease. There won’t be a one-size-fits-all cure. Even within the same cancer, different subtypes present different challenges. As such, a vast amount of energy, time and ultimately money is required to do the work we do.”

As a result of her cancer experience, Alyssa switched from medical school to the lab and her initial research focused on a non-invasive way to better detect breast cancer using targeted molecular imaging probes.

This is the difference Canadians can make when donating to the Canadian Cancer Society. The work being conducted by Alyssa and Canadian Cancer Society funded researchers like her directly benefits cancer patients and offers earlier and better detection against the disease. “In addition to our national sun safely education campaign with the Canadian Cancer Society about the importance of practicing sun safety and safer sources of vitamin D, we were compelled to do even more,” says Stacey Salmon, Director, Jamieson Vitamins. “By encouraging people to donate to cancer research through our matching donation program, we can work together to increase funding for critical research that makes a difference in the lives of people living with cancer.”

“We welcome the expansion of our partnership with Jamieson to include the Gift of Discovery match donation which will make a lasting difference in the lives of Canadians touched by cancer,” says Shawn Chirrey, senior manager, Analysis, Health Policy, Canadian Cancer Society. “With nearly one in two Canadians expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, support has never been more important.”

The joint public education campaign between the Canadian Cancer Society and Jamieson is focused on sun safety and safer sources of vitamin D. Getting sufficient vitamin D is essential as it plays a vital role in a healthy immune system, healthy bones as well as being a factor in maintaining good health. There is also evidence that vitamin D may reduce the risk of some types of cancer, particularly colorectal and breast cancers.

“Sunscreen is imperative to preventing skin cancer, but many Canadians are not aware that sunscreen blocks the production of essential vitamin D. It’s much safer to get your recommended daily intake of vitamin D through supplements or vitamin D enriched foods than from exposure to dangerous UV rays,” added Stacey Salmon.
