GAITHERSBURG, Md., March 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Innovative Therapies is making significant strides in advancing the science behind Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT). The company recently held a “think tank” medical forum of top Podiatry and Plastic Surgeons to discuss how to overcome the medical burden of wounds requiring NPWT. Modern NPWT has been in practice since the late 1970’s when plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Svedman began treating patients. It is estimated that over half a million patients in the United States receive NPWT every year, but that millions more would benefit from the therapy if it were more accessible.

New treatment options are critical to continue advancement of the field to save patients with chronic suffering of open wounds but there are many questions about variables such as usage of instillation and antimicrobial solutions. An elite group of surgeons and Innovative Therapies’ executive team met in a medical forum to discuss the future applications of NPWT and how the needs of the overall population as well as the indigent population can be served more effectively.
