OKLAHOMA CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Medical device company Linear Health Sciences today announced multiple clinical and commercial milestones for its Orchid SRV™, a breakaway safety valve designed to improve the use of medical tubing in hospitals.
More than a dozen clinical sites have evaluated the Orchid Safety Release Valve, a force-activated safety device designed to reduce the risk of IV catheter failure and replacement, with clinical acceptance rates averaging more than 92 percent. Some 30,000 devices have been deployed, and a growing number of hospitals and healthcare systems are evaluating the Orchid device, which is indicated for patients two weeks of age and older during intermittent or continuous infusion.
In one case study, a large regional medical center in the Northeast adopted the Orchid SRV after its evaluation showed annualized cost savings of nearly $104,000, and resulted in a clinical acceptance rate of more than 97 percent.
“Our team has accomplished a remarkable amount in the two years since the Orchid SRV earned its latest FDA clearance, and there is much more to come, as an increasing number of healthcare providers recognize the benefits of addressing tension-based failures in vascular access and the need to deploy new tools in the fight against disruptions in care,” said Linear Health Sciences CEO Dan Clark. “I’m grateful for the team’s hard work and dedication as we continue to improve safety for patients and caregivers, streamline hospital workflows, and – most importantly – help improve patient outcomes.”
Clinical staff largely delivered positive feedback after trialing the Orchid SRV, including:
- “Worked great with one of my patients that had pulled his line 4 times prior to the trial. Applied an Orchid and saved his line 3 times, this is the best invention ever.”
- “Saved my line 3 times on a confused patient.”
- “Product saved my line on a confused patient who is not able to be verbally redirected.”
- “Great resource/tool to have to maintain IV lines, looking forward to utilizing this product.”
- “Occlusion alarming on pump, patient’s dad picked her up AND moved her to a chair, caused the line tension break. No issue priming/replacing Orchid.”
- “It was easy to use and see in the patient’s bed after the occlusion alarm went off.”
- “Felt comfortable with my patient trying to hold his lines.”
- “[Lactated Ringers] infusing patient detached two times, Orchid in place IV preserved.”
- “This is an insurance policy for my access line – very easy to use and can see it being very helpful in workflow.”
Dislodgement is most frequently caused by patient confusion or removal of the catheter, loose dressing or tape, and/or tubing becoming tangled in bed linens. The estimated 5 million U.S. dislodgement events per year are projected to cost $2 billion annually.
The Orchid SRV is placed between the existing IV extension set and general IV administration tubing. When a tension event occurs on the IV line activating the SRV, the valve disconnects, separates and seals off both sides of the IV, creating a sterile barrier.
Linear Health Sciences won an Innovative Technology Award for the Orchid SRV from group purchasing organization Vizient, a national group purchasing agreement for the IV Therapy - Needleless Connectors category with Premier, and recently signed a contract with the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA) and GS2 (Government Solutions & Services), enabling the VA system to evaluate, adopt, and purchase the Orchid SRV.
