Mad Cow Causes Beef Bans, Stocks Drop

The fallout from the first case of mad cow disease in the United States widened on Wednesday as more countries banned the import of U.S. beef and cattle and investors sold off shares in restaurant operators like McDonald’s Corp. that specialize in beef. A small slaughter company in Washington state, where the diseased cow was found, recalled more than 10,000 pounds of raw beef due to concerns the products may contain meat tainted with mad cow disease. The diary cow from rural Washington state came from a large dairy farm, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman said.
