Growing need to eradicate malaria through diagnosis and treatment is expected to fuel market growth.

The global malaria diagnostics market size is expected to reach USD 1.1 billion in 2028, registering a CAGR of 6% over the forecast period, according to the latest report by Reports and Data. Major factor driving market revenue growth is the need to eradicate malaria as disease through diagnosis and treatment. Malaria is one of the most prevalent life-threatening diseases, affecting tropical and subtropical regions as a result of shifting climates, low economic development, underdeveloped healthcare facilities, and lack of advanced treatment.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2019, nealy 229 million cases of malaria were recorded worldwide, with 94% of these cases occurring in the the Africa region.

In 2019, there were around 409,000 malaria deaths worldwide. Children aged under 5 years are the most vulnerable group affected by malaria as they accounted for 67% of all malaria deaths worldwide in 2019. About 95% of global malaria deaths in 2019 were concentrated in 31 countries. Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the United Republic of Tanzania, Mozambique, Niger and Burkina Faso accounted for about 51% of all malaria deaths globally in the same year.

Since 2010, WHO guidelines have recommended that all suspected malaria cases undergo a confirmatory test with microscopy or a Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) and this recommendation has been promoted by WHO’s “test, treat, and monitor” strategy since 2012. Despite the fact that malaria remains a public health problem with over 300,000 children under the age of five dying each year, recent control efforts have significantly reduced the disease burden, especially in high-transmission areas of Africa. On the other hand, introduction of RDT technology has driven the change in policy to confirmatory testing allowing for malaria diagnosis in remote and resource-poor environments and driving malaria diagnosis market.

Rising demand for malaria diagnosis and treatment in Asia Pacific and Latin America will also fuel market expansion. According to a recent UNITAID article, over 400 million malaria rapid diagnostic test treatments will be needed over the next three years to eradicate global malaria prevalence.

Malaria’s significant effect on global health has resulted in technological advancements in its diagnosis. The acceptance rate of alternative diagnostics approaches with superior efficiency and reliable diagnostic solutions has increased significantly. Rising demand for accurate malaria diagnosis would also contribute to the industry’s future growth.

In developing countries, lack of awareness about the availability of malaria diagnostics may restrain the market growth to some extent during the forecast period. Furthermore, currently available diagnostic tests are obsolete, posing a barrier to the implementation of new technology-based diagnostic tests.
