A MOMENTUM™ Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) Scanner by Magnetic Insight has been installed at the Preclinical Imaging Facility at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. The preclinical MOMENTUM scanner produces the world’s highest sensitivity and resolution MPI images.

“We are thrilled that Karolinska has adopted our ground-breaking MPI technology,” said Dr. Patrick Goodwill, Founder and CEO of Magnetic Insight. “We look forward to seeing some of the innovative translational applications that they develop.”

The principal investigator is Professor Moustapha Hassan, Head of the Preclinical Imaging Facility and Director of Preclinical Laboratory. Dr. Hassan’s research group at the Department of Laboratory Medicine focuses on personalized medicine specifically improving the survival and quality of life of cancer patients treated with chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation through enhancing treatment efficacy and decreasing or eliminating the adverse effects.

The newly installed MPI scanner is part of the Preclinical Imaging Facility. “Together with the pre-established preclinical imaging platform, the MOMENTUM scanner will significant strengthen the preclinical research capacity at Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital, for topics in both basic research and translation research including oncology, neurology, radiology, gene and cell therapy, transplantation, etcetera,” said Prof Hassan.

Karolinska Institutet is a leading medical university and accounts for the single largest share of all academic medical research conducted in Sweden. The institute directly employs around 3,000 researchers but is also a hub for collaboration within healthcare services. Karolinska University Hospital is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe. Research at these institutions span the entire medical field, from basic experimental research to patient-oriented research and global health. Their vision is to advance knowledge about life and strive towards better health for all. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet selects the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.

Magnetic Insight has pioneered magnetic particle imaging (MPI), a new diagnostic and monitoring technology that transforms medical imaging. MPI returns unique information not available from current structural and metabolic imaging captured by CT, MRI, and nuclear medicine. For example, MPI offers what no other modality can: the ability to monitor costly immunotherapy treatments and redirect a treatment regimen if necessary. Having started in the preclinical space by selling small animal products to leading universities worldwide, Magnetic Insight is now scaling up MPI technology for clinical use.
