Laurie Stephen and Dominic Eisinger both hold biochemistry Ph.D.s and both were laid off less than half a year ago when biotech company Upstate closed, leaving 150 people without jobs and depriving the region of many talented scientists and technicians. Stephen and Eisinger, rather than leave the area, have started their own scientific research facility in Lake Placid called Multiplex Biosciences, which will conduct contract research and development work for pharmaceutical companies and biotechnology firms working on new drugs and disease treatments.
