The programme is a partnership initiative that works to improve the provision of childhood diabetes care in developing countries.
Novo will set up 12 clinics covering a total of 10 Indian states. The company said it aims to reach 2,500 children with diabetes in a country where more than 50 million people are living with the condition.
Children will receive insulin, blood glucometers and blood strips, while healthcare professionals and diabetes educators will receive a comprehensive training manual and locally adapted educational materials for children and their families.
It is hope that, by the end of 2015, a sustainable cooperation with local partners, including governments and diabetes associations, should be in place to continue with the clinic's work.
The programme is already active in seven other countries including Bangladesh, Cameroon and Uganda, with Novo's intention to provide care to 10,000 children by 2015.
