The new software provides a bi-directional interoperability platform for Medfusion® 4000 syringe pumps
PLYMOUTH, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Smiths Medical, a leading global medical device manufacturer, announced today that its Medfusion® 4000 wireless syringe infusion pumps and PharmGuard® interoperability software successfully completed bidirectional integration testing with Epic’s electronic medical records (EMR) system.
Working with Epic allowed testing and validation to be completed for smart pump programming, a new feature being added to the PharmGuard® interoperability software platform. The addition of smart pump programming is designed to allow a clinician order to be sent directly to the Medfusion® 4000 pump allowing nurses to validate the programmed information with less manual entry, while keeping the nurse in control.
PharmGuard® interoperability software, released in 2015, already allows infusion data to be sent wirelessly directly into patient records in the hospital’s EMR system, saving clinicians’ time in daily workflow, increasing documentation accuracy, and improving patient safety by reducing manual data entry errors.
Smart pump programming and auto-documentation is supported by Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE), an initiative by healthcare professionals and the industry to improve the way computer systems in healthcare share information. IHE promotes the coordinated use of established standards such as DICOM and HL7 to address specific clinical needs in support of optimal patient care. Systems developed in accordance with IHE communicate effectively with one another, are easier to implement, and enable more effective use of information by care providers.
Smart pump programming with PharmGuard® interoperability will soon be commercially available in the USA.
