Thermo Fisher Scientific Announces ‘ABgene Plate of the Month’ for July 2009

EPSOM UK, July 06, 2009 - Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, is pleased to announce the Thermo Scientific ABgene™ SuperPlate 96-well PCR Plate as their “Plate of the Month” for July 2009. The Plate of the Month initiative celebrates entry into the 2nd century of man-made plastics by providing scientists with valuable ways to trial ABgene plates.

The ABgene SuperPlate 96-well PCR plates are the most rigid polypropylene PCR plates available. Their unique design virtually eliminates the warping and robotic handling problems seen with traditional PCR plates. When compared to standard polypropylene plates, the ABgene SuperPlate is four times more rigid. They are able to withstand thermal cycling and heat sealing without deformation, making these plates easy to use in both automated and manual workflows.

Each of the ABgene SuperPlates has raised black grid referencing for easier well identification, preventing pipetting errors and saving time. They also have a raised rim design to improve seal integrity and to minimise evaporation and cross contamination issues.

The ABgene SuperPlate is available in a variety of formats to fit the majority of PCR and QPCR platforms (please refer to selection guide at www.thermo.com/plastics-selection-chart). The ABgene SuperPlate is also available in opaque white to provide the highest level of sensitivity and lowest variance for QPCR applications.

The market leading ABgene range combines precision design, high quality materials and clean room production to ensure reliable and reproducible products that offer consistent performance. Like all ABgene PCR plastic consumables, the ABgene SuperPlate is manufactured from non-porous virgin (medical grade) polypropylene and is extensively quality tested to ensure a plate of the highest quality, certified free from DNase, RNase and endotoxin contamination.

Thermo Fisher Scientific has 10 cases (25 plates in each) of the ABgene SuperPlate Raised Semi-Skirt 96-well PCR plates to give away in July. This offer is on a first come, first served basis and is subject to availability. Background to Plate of the Month

The Thermo Fisher Scientific ‘Plate of the Month’ initiative celebrates entry into the 2nd Century of plastics. The first fully synthetic plastic, Bakelite, was invented by Leo Hendrik Baekeland in 1907 and was unveiled to the public in 1909, heralding what has become known as the ‘age of plastics’. Since then, many other synthetic polymers have been developed, collectively known as plastics. The flexibility, durability, light weight and economical manufacture of these synthetic materials have allowed them to become common-place in every area of life, including medicine and scientific research. It is the versatile, semi-rigid, heat and chemical resistant nature of polypropylene that makes it ideal for use in the manufacture of micro-well plates, enabling them to withstand the heat-cycling process of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
